Soundproofing

Unless you reside on at least five acres surrounded by fields or woodlands, you probably have some neighbors living nearby. As nice as these people may be, some of them could be generating enough of a racket to make your living conditions somewhat less than idyllic.

If you're tired of hearing other people's noise, you're not alone. Peace and quiet are often rare commodities, particularly for those who live in a condo, townhouse or apartment complex that's short on sound mitigation.

Don't blame the builder. The odds are good that he lived up to North American building codes that includes inadequate or non-existant specifications.

Architects across the country are familiar with local building protocols. They regulate everything about a building's construction from its impact on public safety to its influence on the environment.

Unfortunately, when it comes to curbing unwanted noise, these codes are woefully inadequate. The people who drew them up were more concerned with keeping the structure safe than they were with keeping it quiet. That's why paper-thin walls routinely pass muster with little attention to anything beyond their fireproofing abilities.

As you already know, however, noise does matter. How can you get it to stop?

The Four Elements of Soundproofing

Noise consists of sound waves or vibrations that make their way from the original source directly to your ear. You may not be able to stop the annoyance itself, but there are ways to keep it from passing through your walls.

The most successful soundproofing methods incorporate four essential elements. They are:

  • Decoupling. Studs and drywall provide pathways for noise vibrations to travel. Decoupling interrupts those routes.
  • Absorption. Hollow spaces allow sound to resonate. Insulation can help to stifle the echo.
  • Mass. When presented with sound waves, thin walls easily bounce to the beat. Additional mass will beef them up and quiet unwanted vibrations.
  • Dampening. When used correctly, this tactic should keep the walls from vibrating at all.

Each of these elements performs a different function. The best mitigation methods utilizes them all.

Soundproofing the Old-School Way

While numerous soundproofing techniques currently exist, some are more successful than others. Most companies today still use outdated methods to attenuate ie. "decouple and isolate" all of the transmission frequencies or transfer of "airborne transfer and/or structural vibration" which involves removing the sheetrock. After tearing down your walls, workers will install one of several types of hard foam board along with sound isolation clips and drywall furring channels.
This method involves more than just demolition. To be the most effective, the work should really take place on the sound-producing side. Your noisy neighbors are not likely to welcome the thought of opening "their" apartments to this type of construction.
There's even more to the story. That objectionable pandemonium does not come only through your walls, ceilings and floors. It easily works its way around them through "flanking" paths ie. bulkheads, fireplace and downward duct corridors, and also recessed lighting  For this reason, outdated methods will never do the trick for you entirely..

The most effective means of noise mitigation is also the least invasive. It involves the use of an open cell-spray foam that applies cleanly through holes in the wall no bigger than a dime. Once this foam has entered the space behind the sheetrock, it expands dramatically, effectively sealing the smallest nooks and crannies to keep unwanted noise where it belongs: on the other side of that wall.

Because your drywall remains in place, our method of injecting sound-deadening foam through minuscule holes has the least-invasive impact on your living space. It also achieves the four essentials of decoupling, absorption, mass and dampening(stifling that pounding bass music), resulting in a soundproofing with the highest-available Sound Transmission Class rating. Our injection foam method is also the best of the lot at isolating those hard-to-block low-frequency sound waves.

Existing wall injection foam was the perfect solution for people like our newlywed clients in Jersey City, New Jersey, who found themselves sharing their joy with the teenage boy next door. We also saved the day for our Hoboken, New Jersey client whose home overlooking the Hudson River adjoined that of a well-known rap artist, who blasted loud music all night long.

Our method is equally skilled at muffling street noises. This not only enabled a night-shift worker from Brooklyn, New York, to sleep during the daytime hours but also allowed another night-shift worker client from Staten Island, New York, to sleep, through ear-splitting leaf blowers and commercial lawn mowers at the house next door.

Why Are You Still Suffering?

Everyone has the right to a peaceful existence, and our foam-injection method can give it to you in the most effective way with the least amount of fuss. Don't live in misery for one day longer than you have to. Call today for a free estimate and let us get a start on improving your living space existence.

Remember: Super soundproofing is our goal. We know how to do it right.
