The science using of an infrared imaging measurement device to "see" and "measure thermal energy emitted from an object is called Thermography.

The human eye cannot detect infra-red or thermal energy because the wavelength produced is too long to visually capture. It is the part of the electromagnetic spectrum we perceive as "heat".
